Oshkosh is County Seat of Garden County

Present day Garden County Court House

When Oshkosh was made a county seat in 1909, the commissioners rented the lower floor of the Commercial Hotel in Oshkosh for a courthouse, hired Mr. Day to transcribe the records from Deuel county; built a temporary jail and a cement vault for the records, and early in 1910 Oshkosh got settled down to the duties and responsibilities as county seat of the new county. The second story of the Hotel continued to rent out rooms. For a dollar a night, the traveler could have the unique experience of lodging in the upper story of the courthouse. This arrangement continued until 1921, when the current courthouse, shown above, was built.

Oshkosh is home to two museums.

Stone Opera House Museum Rock School House Museum

Seeing the need for a Social Hall, Wynes and Bushnell erected the stone Opera House in 1907 after the sale of Woodman Hall in 1905.
The Opera House Museum houses period costumes, photos, newsclippings, many taxidermist examples of native birds. A turn of the century "working" loom. A turn of the century "dentist" office.
The Old Rock School House Museum has many volumes of old Garden County News Papers, Photos, Histories, photo albums, a section on Native Americans, much Oshkosh and Nebraska History, old books, desks. Agricultural implements, antiques.
There is so much more available to see at both museums I could not begin to list it all here. Both are well worth visiting.
Museum hours vary. Open weekdays all summer, and by appointment throughout the school year. Private tours available.
