Valentine Arnett Family Census Files(graphic versions)

I am just starting to enter information here. Format may change as I add more to it. Hopefully, the way I am presenting it here is not too confusing.

I have not found much of anything about Valentine and Sarah yet, except for their names. I have seen postings saying Valentine came from Dorchester County, Maryland, after serving in the Revolutionary War. I cannot verify nor deny this statement.

Concerning Sarah: (Note from another researcher)
Could this be Sarah Meyers of the Nanticoke Indians as wife of Valentine (the elder?) and mother of the Valentine and James mentioned in More Marylanders to Carolina? Time and further information may tell.

Possibly our Valentine:
http://www.goldenlyon.com/wright.html
Dorchester Land Records 12 HD 525, 12 HD 529 & 12 HD 552 gives a power of attorney to Valentine Arnett and also a lease followed by a deed for the Nanticoke Indian Lands to Gottlieb Shober of Salem, N. C. Obviously, this action was invalidated since, unlike the Choptank Indians, the Nanticoke Indians did not own their Reservation it was theirs enly as long as they occupied it. It was not theirs to lease or sell.

Possibly our Valentine:

Sarah was a member of the Methodist Society (Thomas Arnett Journal, pg. 1)
Valentine and Sarah had 10 children, 9 boys and 1 girl. (Thomas Arnett Journal, pg 1)
Citation Text: (Thomas Arnett Journal Pages 1 and 2)
I was born, according to the best account I could obtain, on the 30th day of the 6th month, 1791, in the County of Guilford and State of North Carolina. My parents' names were Valentine and Sarah Arnett, who moved to the County of Stokes, a county joining and lying west of Guilford, when I was about two or three years of age, where I was brought up. I can say but little about my father, for he went a journey to the North when I was about eight or nine years old, where he died, many miles from home: so I never saw him afterwards. My mother was left in very limited circumstances, with ten children --one daughter and nine sons. She was a pious woman, having joined herself in connection with the Methodist Society before I was born, and continued a member with them as long as she lived. She embarked to train us up in piety and virtue as much as she could: but her circumstances were so limited that she thought it best to hire us out for her's and our support, and being able to keep us together: so that we were much from under her control, and also much exposed to the vain customs of the world.
I was the seventh son, and was soon old enought to be hired out for my own and her support.

On pg. 151 (same journal/book)(5th Month, 1844):
"On the 23rd we rode about forty miles over a very bad, difficult road to travel; attended Flatrock mid-week meeting, as it came in course on the way, and in the evening we were favored to land at the house of my dear brother, Jesse Arnett, who is an approved and acceptable minister in our religious Society,"

Source info: Memoirs of Thomas Arnett, The Life, Travels, and Gospel Labors of Thomas Arnett. 422 page hardbound book. Published 1884. Chicago. Publishing Association of Friends. Author: Thomas Arnett. Published after the death of Thomas.

(Quaker records to follow later on this page under headings for each child)
**************************************

This text tells us that Thomas was born in 1791, and that his father, Valentine, went north when he was about 8 or 9. (1799-1800) No specific date is given, and no information, other than "north" for location. No cause of death listed.

Some children must be rearranged in order of birth to comply with Thomas' statement, "I was the seventh son". As it stands now, we have him as the 7th child, but the 6th son. Hopefully, we will be able to fill in blanks with more research.

As it stands now, our "facts" about the children are not all verifiable, up to and including actual names of some of them. We are using sources such as the LDS ancestral files from www.familysearch.com as a basis to start our research with. Thomas and Jesse, we are VERY confident of, and have solid evidence for. Willis is mentioned much in Quaker records, also, but I have not really seen anything DEFINATE that says "Yes, this is the right child for the right family, not children of the same name from another family. The search continues. Decendants of Edward have done much research, and shared their family outlines, but we have seen no documents yet at this time that would cement the "facts".

*****************************************************************************************

We still find Valentine (or family) listed in the 1800 and 1810 census for Stokes County, NC. Valentine himself is listed in the 1800 census (male 45+ =1), 10 children (nine boys, and one girl) and his wife (female 45+ =1)
In the 1810 census, his household is listed, but he is not. Two sons, One daughter, and Sarah remain at home, or possibly, this could be one of the older boys and wife, or daughter and husband, and a boy of age 10-16 in the home.
The family was poor, and all of the boys were "working out" as they got old enough, to help with family support by this time(Thomas Arnett Journal). We truly wish all members of households had been listed by name on this census, so we could find where our boys were.

John Arnett

***************************

May 2, 1792, N.C. - July 22, 1879

(This information is unverified by us. A paper, a copy machine copy of copies, was sent to us with one of the many packets we have recieved from other researches. The heading on the paper states: "Lutton-Wilhelm Genealogy, research begun 1949." and lists John D. Arnett as son of Valentine and Sarah. I present it here to you as being as yet unverified by us.)
************************************

John D. Arnett,
b. May 2, 1792, N.C. (birth location, it says, from 1850 Monroe Co. Mo. census)
d. July 22, 1879, Benton County, Missouri (aged 88 Yrs on cemetery stone)
b. Bethel Campground Church Cemeter, Edwards, Benton Co. Mo.
M. Nov. 11, 1814, Jessamine Co., Kentucky to
Abigail Walters -- 7 Pleasant [my note-no idea what that means] (Abby from Marriage record)

John D. Arnett was a private in the War of 1812, as the records in the U.S. Archives show. He served from Aug. 15, 1812 to Mar. 25, 1813 "233 days" as a private in Capt. Patrick Gray's Company of Infantry, 5 Reg't Kentucky Volunteer Militia, Col Lewis' (Colonel William Lewis) Regiment, Winchester Brigade. He enlisted at (Nicholasville), Jessamine County, Kentucky and was honorably discharged at Urbanna, Ohio. He "was at Ft Wain and was a guard when building Ft. Defiance", according to his declaration for pension in 1871. Also in that application is found his wife's maiden name Abigil Waters, that she died June 8, 1871, and that they were married Nov. 11, 1814 in Jessamine County, Kentucky.

Again I want to point out, this was a copy machine copy of copies we recieved. I cannot verify the validity.
The pages also included a copy of pages stating "copies from an old piece of linen paper in an old trunk Aunt Bertha had of grandpa Arnetts" The handwriting, including a "note to Clara" seems to all be one handwriting, therefore, not "scans" of the actual linen sheets, but handwritten copy from one relative to another.
I haven't a clue who Aunt Bertha may have been. Nor who Clara is. The same holds true for Martin, in the statement below.
A note on the accompanying genealogical sheet states "Martin writes that he was the same as John D. Arnett (below) who was born May 2, 1792 in North Carolina. He and many of his family were buried in a Methodist church yard in Missouri. In the 1850 census our John D. Arnett was listed as age 66, but all other records found indicate he was born in 1791 or 92."

This information has not been verified in anyway by me.

May be a land exchange record for Edward Arnett.

Possible Land Purchase

I left "all" the Arnetts showing in the 1820 Stokes Census here under Edward for purposes of "tracking" the family, but repeat the chart under Asbury, without the additional, also repeated under "unverified" for ?James and possibly Charles. By this year, Jesse was married to Margarette Williams (m. 1817) and already have moved to Indiana (1819- 4,21 Jesse & fam get New Garden MM, Ind. (Union MM- Hinshaw pg911)), Valentine(Jr.) was married to Celia Hancock(m.1815)(unverified)-no idea where they went from here, Thomas was, during this time (Dec 1820), traveling on a mission to Dover MM (?Indiana) (Thomas Arnett Journal, pg 25), Charles, if dates are right, would have been 19, which leads me to suspect that the James named MAY be the John from above (Family of Valentine and Sarah), and that Charles may be living with them at this time (unverified), Uncertain as to the whereabouts of Willis at this time. No information at all on Joseph, John(?possibly James?), or Polly, named above under "children of Valentine & Sarah".

On the 1820 Census for Stokes County, we find Edwards household has a total of 5 persons. Himself (male age 26-45), his wife (female age 25-45), and 3 children. 2 girls and 1 boy, all under age 10. From information recieved from Marie Jones (see below), this would be daughter Eliza, born abt. 1816, son Thomas Combs, born August 31, 1817, and possibly daughter Salina, but this would make her reported birth of December 14, 1821 incorrect (census taken Dec. 1820) by at least one year. Further investigation may be necessary here.

JESSE ARNETT* (VALENTINE1) was born June 01, 1796 in , Stokes Co., Nc, and died May 13, 1876 in , Wayne Co., In Webster Cem., Wayne Co., IN. He married MARGARET WILLIAMS* September 10, 1817 in Guilford Co., Nc (stokes Co NC?), daughter of OWEN WILLIAMS* and SARAH WILLITS*.
(note: the daughter, Sarah, is not mentioned in the Will of Jesse Arnett. That makes us question the validity that she is indeed a daughter of Jesse and Margaret. We leave the name entered here because all other sources have listed her, but this may just be perpetuating an error. I'm hoping there is some way to find proof one way or the other soon.
The will, if you look closely, also seems to spell the name of the daughter named Annis as Amos. We have found cemetery records for an Amos Arnett with the exact same birth and death dates as Annis.
The daughter we have listed as Edwina is named in the Will as Elmina.
Children Elam, and William had died by the time the Will was written in 1870, as had Mahala, but Mahala had grown to adulthood, and had heirs.)
*****************

The Will of Jesse Arnett names his children, and unfortunately, THAT list does not match the list found on the ancestral files found online on familysearch.com (LDS site) so we must remember that those files are user submitted, aslo, and may contain errors, OR he may have disowned one of the children. (although the copy is handwritten, and I admittedly am not the best person to transcribe others handwriting, it says roughly):

While I am not yet obtained any proof that this is our Charles, I am fairly confident, because of age, and in the same area as brothers Edward and Thomas, that it indeed, IS our Charles Arnett. I present it here in that light.
